I am a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. I received my PhD from the Communication Department at Cornell University in 2010. I have a MA from Cornell in Communication and a MA in Social Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. My research explores the psychological effects of social media and mobile technology, particularly as it relates to mental and physical health. I am particularly interested in perceptions and attitudes about identity, social support, & health in the context of popular digital media use (i.e. Facebook, blogs, texting, email, etc.) as well as new systems that I have helped to design. I draw on research in the area of new technologies, as well as interpersonal communication, health communication and human-computer interaction. I enjoy collaborating with people across areas of communication as well as with people outside of communication (e.g. computer scientists, MDs, psychologists) My dissertation explored the role of audience in blogs as it was associated with changes in self-concept. More recently I have explored the relationship between digital technology use and perceptions of social support across SES and health in a daily diary study. I have also collected interview data on low-income mobile users in NYC to explore the implementation of a text-based neighborhood watch program and improve neighborhood communication. In addition to doing research, I like hip-hop, trip-hop and puppies. I like Mad Men, Almodovar, and p values less than .01. If you want to know what my favorite color jellybean is, or have any research questions, drop me an email at gamy at wharton dot upenn dot edu.
